Does AstroCamp Offer Scholarships or Financial Aid?
Yes. However, applications for financial aid must be received prior to March 1 for that year’s summer program. Please contact the AstroCamp Registrar for an application and more information.

How Is The AstroCamp Staff Hired and Trained?
We take pride in employing a well-trained staff of the highest quality. All cabin counselors are current university students with a background working with children. Applicants go through a rigorous hiring process including multiple interviews, a background check and drug testing. Additionally, many cabin counselors were AstroCampers themselves! Counselors go through an 8-day training program prior to any campers arriving at camp. They are trained in team-building, group-leading, child development, safety, and being sensitive to individual campers needs and life experiences. Camp logistics and the camp program are also taught and counselors participate in a number of role-playing activities to prepare for situations that could arise during the summer.

Our instructors come to AstroCamp from all over the United States and occasionally from overseas. We have Astrocamp questions - Guided Discoveries Astrocampapproximately 28 instructors either teaching classes or being helpful hands as techs. Requirements for being an instructor are a Bachelors degree in Astronomy or Physics, a strong desire to teach and a love for working with children. We pride ourselves on hiring fun exciting people that have a strong knowledge base and want to work with children.

All staff must satisfactorily complete a criminal history record check before beginning work. This screening includes a self-disclosure form, a public records check and annual check of the U.S. Department of Justice National Sex Offender Public Website. In addition, all employees must satisfactorily complete biometric (Live Scan Fingerprint) screening submitted to the California Department of Justice and the FBI.

These criminal history records are reviewed by the AstroCamps’ HR Director prior to the employee beginning work and must conform to Guided Discoveries’ hiring thresholds.

If My Child Is Flying In How Will They Get To AstroCamp?
AstroCamp Counselors will meet your camper at their gate, help them to get their luggage and accompany them on a bus to AstroCamp where they will meet their cabin counselor. Approximately 40% of our campers fly in each summer. There is an additional charge for airport shuttle service. Please see the Parent Guide for more information.

Can My Camper Write or E-mail Me From Camp?
Your camper can write you from camp. Stamps, postcards and stationary are available in the camp store. It’s not a bad idea to send stamps, envelopes, and paper with your camper to camp. You can      e-mail your camper by using our email system.

Can I call my child at camp? Can my child call home?
We request that you call your child only in the case of an emergency 951.659.6062. We strongly believe in the benefit of campers and parent’s disconnecting from each other other than letters. Incoming parent phone calls can be a challenge because students are busy in program from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Students are only allowed to call home with the knowledge and consent of the Summer Camp Director.

Can parents visit their kids?
No. Due to the remote location of our facility, and for the safety of all our campers, we do not allow parental visits during camp.

What if there is a family emergency?
In case of an emergency or any essential communication, we are happy to arrange a time for your camper to be near a phone, as appropriate. Our camp secretary is on duty from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.  Monday-Friday and a counselor staffs the phone every night from 6:30-9 p.m. and on weekends. Additionally, the directors have a camp phone on in their house 24 hours a day. Our number is 951-659-6062.

If my camper has special needs, how are they accommodated?
We will make every effort to accommodate any special needs your camper may have. Please contact the Summer Camp Director, Brian Straka, as soon as possible and he will discuss any needs and issues with you. What is the weather like at AstroCamp in the summer?
Due to the elevation, the days are often mild (mid to upper 70s) but the nights can get cold. We recommend packing long pants and a sweatshirt that the camper can wear to evening activities.

Do you serve vegetarian alternatives?
We provide a vegetarian option at every meal. We also have a salad bar at both lunch and dinner.

Do you have a nurse or doctor on site?
We do have a medical professional on the premises for our summer programs. The Health Center is where all prescription and over the counter medications are stored and dispensed by our camp nurse. Additionally, our staff holds certifications in first aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and Lifeguarding. For more serious issues we can contact the local paramedics who will arrange transport to the local clinic or hospital. The typical EMS response time to our facility is 6-10 minutes.

Can I participate if I have asthma?
Students with asthma participate in our program all the time. It is critical for students with asthma to bring their inhaler with them to every program, including programs such as Microgravity and Day Hikes. Without their inhaler, participation in the program may be limited.
